Excel to Mind Map

Drop any .xlsx, .xls, or .csv file onto SpawnGraph and get an editable mind map in seconds. Column headers become branches, rows become sub-nodes, and data cells become leaves. The file stays on your device — parsing runs in your browser using the File API.

How it works

  1. 1Save your spreadsheet. Save as .xlsx, .xls, .csv, or .tsv. From Google Sheets, use File → Download → Microsoft Excel.
  2. 2Drop it onto SpawnGraph. The browser File API reads the file locally — no upload, no server round-trip.
  3. 3Headers become branches, rows become nodes. The parser maps the spreadsheet structure into a navigable visual hierarchy.

Why convert Excel to a mind map?

Spreadsheets hide relationships in rows. A column labelled "Owner" sits twelve cells to the right of a column labelled "Status", and you have to scroll horizontally to see how they connect. A mind map makes those relationships visible at a glance — every column becomes a branch, every cell becomes addressable from the centre of the map in one click. The format is well-suited to project trackers, budget breakdowns, org data, survey results, and product roadmaps that started life in a sheet. Once the data is in mind-map form, you can collapse the columns you do not currently need, recolour by category, and share a one-screen overview of what would otherwise be a wall of cells.

What Excel formats does SpawnGraph support?

The supported set covers every common spreadsheet workflow: .xlsx (Excel 2007+), .xls (legacy Excel), .csv (comma-separated values), and .tsv (tab-separated values). Google Sheets integrates via its Download menu — choose Microsoft Excel (.xlsx) or CSV and drop the resulting file onto SpawnGraph. Apple Numbers exports to .xlsx via File → Export To → Excel. LibreOffice Calc saves natively as .xlsx or .ods (use the broader File to Mind Map path for .ods). The file is parsed locally — open DevTools → Network to confirm no upload happens during import.

From Google Sheets to mind map

Open the sheet. Choose File → Download → Microsoft Excel (.xlsx) or CSV — both work. The download saves to your local Downloads folder. Drag the file onto the SpawnGraph canvas or click the import button. Headers from row 1 become the top-level branch labels, and each subsequent row becomes a child node. The same flow works for any structured data table, including exports from Airtable, Notion databases, Linear, Asana, Jira, and Trello.

Editing and sharing the resulting map

The imported map is a starting point. Rename nodes to use clearer labels than the original column headers, recolour branches by category (status, owner, priority), collapse dense data branches you do not currently need, and add child nodes for context the spreadsheet did not capture. Export the result as PNG for a slide, as CSV to round-trip back to the spreadsheet, or share it via a live link with view or edit permissions. Real-time collaboration is included on the free tier — see the business use case for team workflows.

In short: SpawnGraph converts Excel, CSV, and TSV spreadsheets into editable mind maps using browser-native NLP. The file stays on your device — no upload, no signup required.

Frequently asked questions

How do I convert an Excel file to a mind map?
Save your spreadsheet as .xlsx or .csv and drop it onto SpawnGraph. The parser reads it in your browser and structures column headers into branches and rows into child nodes.
Can I convert Google Sheets to a mind map?
Yes. In Google Sheets, choose File → Download → Microsoft Excel (.xlsx) or CSV, then drop the file onto SpawnGraph. The exported structure is preserved.
Does SpawnGraph upload my Excel file?
No. SpawnGraph parses spreadsheets in your browser using the File API. The file bytes never leave your device. Open DevTools → Network during import to verify no upload happens.
What if my spreadsheet has multiple sheets?
SpawnGraph processes the first (active) sheet. For multi-sheet workbooks, export each sheet separately and import them as individual mind maps.
